Are you wondering if perhaps Administrative Professionals Day (or some refer to it as Administrative Assistant’s Day) wasn’t started by the greeting card companies in order to sell more cards? Nope…
Since 1952, the International Association of Administrative Professionals has sponsored Administrative Professionals Week as a way to honor these hard working office administrators. Administrative Professionals Week is an annual event “to recognize the valuable contributions of office support staff in business and government, and to encourage students to consider careers as administrative professionals.”
Today, Administrative Professionals Week/Day is one of the largest workplace observances (not a public holiday) – other than the celebrating of employee birthdays or major holidays.
In 2000, the IAAP changed the name for Professional Secretaries Week/Day to Administrative Professionals Week/Day, in order to keep pace with changing job titles and the expanding responsibilities of today’s administrative workforce. According to the IAAP, many workers around the world still hold the “secretary” job title; however, many alternative titles have become more popular, such as administrative assistant, office coordinator, administrative specialist, executive assistant or office manager.
Administrative Professionals Day is celebrated worldwide. Activities such as community events, educational seminars and personal gifts of recognition including cards, flowers, gift baskets, luncheons and other tokens of appreciation are given to applaud the invaluable support that the administrative personnel provide every day.
Administrative Professionals Week is always the last full week in April. This year, the Administrative Professionals Week theme is “Power of Commitment” and is celebrated the week of April 18-24, and Administrative Professionals Day is on Wednesday, April 21, 2010.
